The British Red Cross has appointed a former Football Association chair, David Bernstein, to lead its board of trustees.
From January Bernstein will replace the charity's previous chair Lord Allen of Kensington, who has been appointed to the House of Lords.
Bernstein said of his appointment: “I am greatly honoured to have been appointed chair of this marvellous organisation, and to have the opportunity of continuing Charles Allen’s great work with the board of trustees and senior management team. I look forward to making a meaningful contribution over the coming years.”
The chartered accountant is the current chair of fashion company Ted Baker, and has served on company boards including French Connection, Carluccio’s and Pentland Group.
Bernstein has held several high-profile roles in the world of football. He is a former chair of the Football Association, Wembley Stadium and Manchester City FC. He is also heavily involved in pursuing the cause of diversity and equality without discrimination in football.
His previous voluntary and charitable roles include working with disabled sports fans via Level Playing Field and Cafe, and with the Prince’s Trust.
