Barnarndo’s has made two of its senior leadership team interim co-CEOs while it recruits a permanent replacement for Javed Khan.
Khan resigned as chief executive last month but is continuing as an adviser to the board until the end the year.
The board has now appointed Lyn Perry, corporate director of children’s services, and Michelle Lee-Izu, director of development, as interim co-CEOs.
Perry has been acting CEO since July, when Khan stood down. Barnardo’s says that the idea for the interim co-CEO role came from Perry and Lee-Izu.
In a joint statement they said: “We are pleased and excited that the trustees saw this model of collaboration and joint leadership as an approach that could serve the charity at this time.
“This is a crucial time for the charity. The impact of the pandemic has been deeply traumatic for children and young people and many families are struggling to cope. Our services have never been more needed at a time when our income, like many others’, has taken a significant hit.”
For the financial year ending 31 March 2020, Barnardo’s had an income of nearly £300m. It has not filed its 2021 accounts yet, but has previously said it faces a £65m income shortfall.
Perry and Lee-Izu added: “We are absolutely committed to ensuring that the charity emerges even stronger in the aftermath of the pandemic, and continues to embrace innovation, creativity and partnership working, so we can continue to meet the complex and changing needs of children and families in communities across the UK.”
