Amnesty UK has decided to hold off any restructure or redundancies until after its annual general meeting in the spring, following months of dispute with its union.
A meeting of the board last weekend resulted in the decision to postpone the proposed restructure and redundancies until after the organisation has put the changes to its members at the AGM in April. The decision follows fierce campaigning and strike action by Amnesty UK staff since autumn last year. Local staff currently face job losses as Amnesty moves to refocus its activities closer to the regions in which it works.
Following the board meeting, Amnesty UK released this statement: “The board is keen to build a constructive dialogue with members over how Amnesty UK meets its commitment to the international Amnesty movement while remaining an effective campaigning and activist organisation here in the UK.”
It said that it has already begun a dialogue with those behind an extraordinary general meeting, held in January, where a majority of members voted down some of the proposed changes.
