Age UK expects to make around 90 redundancies by the end of September, representing about 3 per cent of its 2,400 workforce.

In a statement today, Tom Wright, Age UK’s group CEO, said: “We have completed a three-month collective consultation which ended in June 2013 and to date there have been 73 redundancies – 14 of these voluntary. We anticipate this reaching a total of 85-90 by the end of September.”

He added that over the coming year the charity planned to create new posts to focus on its priority areas and to support future income growth.

“We are confident that by acting decisively now to make the changes we are planning, we will strengthen our charitable work in the future,” he said.

According to its latest accounts in the year to March 2012, Age UK's income rose by £11.3m to £167.7m. Voluntary income was £50.1m. The charity also raised £109.3m from charity shops, insurance and other trading activity.

But exclusive figures, to be released in October in Charity Finance’s Charity Shop Survey 2013, show that this year Age UK was forced to close seven shops and profits from its retail division were down 8 per cent compared with 2012.
