BBC Children in Need’s 2021 appeal raised over £39m on the night, which is over £2m more than last year.

The three-hour live show raised £39,398,048 for vulnerable children across the UK, with the final total to be announced later on. This is over £2m more than last year.

However, the charity's telethon total is still down compared to years before the pandemic - for example, the 2019 total was over £47m, and 2018's was over £50m.

This is the second year running the fundraiser has had a shorter running time, as previously the show could be up to seven hours long. It broadcast from BBC Studios Salford for the first time in the event’s history this year.

Money raised will go towards helping disadvantaged children and young people in the UK. According to the BBC Children in Need website, the charity currently supports 3,000 local charities and projects which address topics such as terminal illness, poverty, disability and trauma.

Mel Giedroyc, Graham Norton, Chris Ramsey, Alex Scott and Ade Adepitan presented last Friday’s show. They were joined by a host of celebrities, including Ed Sheeran, Amanda Holden and Tom Grennan.

The 41st annual fundraising show featured special episodes of popular shows The Repair Shop, I Can See Your Voice and The Wall.
