This week, for the first time in what feels like an age, Spy has ventured forth in a search for all things charity social media that don’t involve baked goods. Stand Up to Cancer is harnessing the power of YouTube and the National Osteoporosis Society is bringing back fluorescent orange.
Stand up to Cancer live YouTube stream
Oh yes, nothing quite captures the imagination of modern 18 to 20-something Britons like a YouTube live streaming event.
As part of this year’s Stand Up to Cancer fundraising extravaganza, some of “YouTube’s biggest stars” – including Spy’s personal favourite: Pixiwoo - will be putting on a world first, continuous 12-hour YouTube live streaming party in order to raise funds for Cancer Research UK on October 17.
And, of course, the whole thing will be live-tweeted, using the #YTStandsUpToCancer.
Why we love it: hip, media-savvy youngsters hanging out on Google, doing live performances and offering prizes to raise money to fight cancer. What’s not to love?
#LaceUpForBones from the National Osteoporosis Society
To coincide with World Osteoporosis Day on October 20, the National Osteoporosis Society has designed special pairs of orange laces for people to wear “in their trainers, gym shoes, hiking boots, walking shoes and any other footwear that laces”.
No luck then for the boot and/or Velcro crowd.
Not only do the orange laces make for a fun way to jazz up one’s everyday foot attire, but every pair of laces sold (£2 on the National Osteoporosis Society’s website) will go towards helping the more than three million people in the UK who suffer from the disease.
More than 3,000 laces have already been sold and people up and down the UK are sharing their pictures on Twitter with #laceupforbones.
Why we love it: For starters, Spy is of the opinion that fluorescent orange is a colour that more people should be wearing. Plus any social media campaign that can get people up on their feet and moving about can’t be a bad thing.
