Surfers against Sewage created a 30ft sand artwork on Little Lusty Glaze beach in Cornwall to celebrate the Royal Wedding

This weekend many took part in celebrations for the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The couple, who are now to be known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, has picked seven charities which they ask the public to donate to in order to mark their special day

Other charities also got involved, with many benefitting from the celebrations.

Surfers against Sewage

Surfers against Sewage, one of the seven official charities receiving donations from the public in celebration of the Royal Wedding, has marked the day by creating a 30ft sand artwork congratulating the couple.

It said the sand art was a mark of gratitude for the now Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and said it was thrilled with “the overwhelming support it has seen since the announcement last month”.

The 30ft artwork on Little Lusty Glaze beach in Cornwall (pictured) was created by Ed Stanbury and is a fitting emblem of celebration and thanks on the wedding day, and a reflection of the charity’s vision of Plastic Free Coastlines.

The charity has also created a unique wooden traditional bellyboard surfboard to celebrate the day, crafted by local Cornish artisan James Otter from locally sourced wood.

Surfers against Sewage said it has seen a “huge surge in phone calls and traffic to its website since being announced as one of the Royal Wedding beneficiaries”.

Meanwhile, new membership figures of the charity have increased dramatically, up 178 per cent on last year, with many international donors now also signed up.

Hospices receive royal flowers

The florist for the wedding, Philppa Craddock, said on Instagram that the flowers from the two entrance designs at St George’s Chapel were turned into hand ties and delivered to hospitals and women’s refuges across London.

St Joseph Hospice in London was one of the organisations to receive flowers from the wedding. They uploaded a photo on Facebook of one of its residents holding a bunch of flowers.

Windsor Homeless Project

Windsor Homeless Project, which made the papers in recent weeks due to its objection to homeless people being moved off of the streets in Windsor in preparation for the wedding, has created its own range of wedding memorabilia.

Its merchandise, that was designed by Revolt Communications but inspired by the charity, can be purchased with 100 per cent of the profits going directly to Windsor Homeless Project. They are available on the website forricherforpoorer.org.

Its products include a tea towel for £25, for which proceeds go towards a moving-in pack of everything needed to create a welcoming home for someone getting off the streets; a fridge magnet for £15 which proceeds would pay for a week of hot meals for someone living on the streets of Windsor; and a collectible Tshirt for £40, which pays for fresh new socks and underwear to help someone living on the streets stay clean and hygienic.

A commemorative plate is also on sale for £5,000, which is the cost of getting someone of the streets of an entire year.

A video has also been made featuring the homeless of Winsdor, and some of the people who support them.

The Dogs Trust

During the Royal Wedding the Dogs Trust was tweeting about its own “Prince Harry” and “Meghan”, just two of a litter of ten born at the charity’s rehoming centre and all given Royal names to “celebrate the fact that they are beginning a new chapter in their young lives on the day the Prince and the Hollywood actress become husband and wife”.

Saturday was the puppies' rehoming day, where they all left the centre to join their new families.

Dawn Bishop, rehoming centre manager at Dogs Trust Manchester, says: “On the day the couple commit themselves to each other for the rest of their lives, our lovely and very excited owners will be making exactly the same commitment to their furry, four-legged family member. It has been a joy to look after them and no doubt they will be treated like royalty in their new homes!

“It’s wonderful that everyone has found their special someone and we wish Prince Harry and Meghan, and our terrific ten, all the happiness they deserve.”
