This equates to nearly £10,000 a minute, which is 48 per cent rise in donations compared to an ordinary Tuesday.

3,300 charities take part

Giving Tuesday took place on 3 December and is led by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) in the UK .

This year 3,300 UK charities and businesses took part, up from 2,600 last year.

The Big Give charity’s week-long Christmas Challenge, which ran from the 3 - 10 December, was one of the UK’s biggest ever match-funding campaigns. On Giving Tuesday itself, it raised more than £5.1m, £600,000 more than last year.

Over the course of the week the Big Give raised £15.6m, up from £13.3m last year.

Elsewhere, Royal Bank of Scotland donated £250,000 to charities chosen by its employees and customers, and made £100,000 available to match customers’ donations via their MyReward points.

Globally, Giving Tuesday donations via PayPal were $106m – up from last year’s $98m.

‘Smashed expectations’

Gráinne Mathews, CAF’s Giving Tuesday Lead in the UK, said: “Giving Tuesday 2019 has smashed the Charities Aid Foundation’s expectations and the hopes of our partners.

“CAF’s research has shown a worrying decline in the amount of people giving to charity, which makes Giving Tuesday so important in reminding everyone of the amazing work charities are doing and how we can help them.

“Our sincere thanks go to the many people who worked together to make a world of difference.”
