A charity set up by Philip Green, which organised an event to support “women empowerment”, was removed from the register of charities earlier this year.

The Kahn Charitable Trust was registered with the Charity Commission in 1980 and was removed from the register in March this year because the charity had “ceased to exist”.

In 2013 it announced it would hold a conference in Manchester where one of the key themes was “women empowerment” and Theresa May, then the Home Secretary was listed as a keynote speaker. Other topics on the proposed agenda were “women and gender equality” and "violence against women etc".

The website for the conference said the charity and its co-sponsors Subsea7 Oil and Gas UK Ltd and McDonald’s would pay for the costs of delegates attending. However it is unclear that the conference ever happened.

“Kahn Charitable Trust is a philanthropic initiative of Sir Philip Green which was registered on the 8th day of April 1980 with a vision of putting lost smiles back on the faces of less privileged persons across the globe,” the conference website said.

It said the charity's philosophy is to “love one another”. The website said the charity has awarded £2.6m across 125 grants since its inception.

The charity appears that it has been dormant for some years. Its last significant income was in 2004, when it received £11,000.

Green was named yesterday in Parliament as businessman who had used non-disclosure agreements and taken out an injunction to prevent the Telegraph from reporting accusations of sexual, racial harassment, and bullying.

Lord Hain used parliamentary privilege to name him, saying it was “clearly in the public interest”.

Green issued a statement "categorically and wholly" denying abuse allegations.
