03 Apr 2018 News

Our weekly summary of the latest movers in the charity sector.

Chief executives

The Fundraising Regulator has announced that Gerald Oppenheim will replace current chief executive Stephen Dunmore, when he steps down from the role in the summer.

Oppenheim is currently the regulator’s head of policy and communications, a role he has held at the organisation since 2016. Prior to joining the Fundraising Regulator, Oppenheim worked extensively in the sector. He was director of policy at the National Lottery Charities Board for nine years, and spent five years as director of policy and partnerships at the Big Lottery Fund.

He is also currently chair of the London Emergencies Trust and has sat on the boards of Citizens Advice and the BBC Charitable Appeals Advisory Committee.

Daniel Carmel-Brown has been appointed as the new chief executive of Jewish Care

He is currently the organisation’s director of fundraising and marketing. He replaces Simon Morris, who is stepping down from the charity after 15 years at the helm.

Carmel-Brown is due to take up his new role on 1 July 2018, and has worked for Jewish Care in one capacity or another for over 20 years.

Non executive

Helen Baker has been appointed as the new chair of Shelter’s board of trustees. She will take up her new role with the charity in May.

Baker originally trained as a social worker, before going on to have a career in the voluntary and public sectors. She has chaired two NHS trusts in Oxfordshire and was previously chair of Charityworks.

Baker takes over a radically changed trustee board which includes four new trustees: Manpreet Dillon; Laurice Ponting; Shaun Prime and Phillippe Lintern as well as a new audit, risk and finance group.

Dame Mary Archer has been appointed as chair of the Science Museum board group by the Prime Minister.

Archer, who has taught chemistry at both Oxford and Cambridge Universities, has been reappointed to the role for a second four-year term.

She is also currently president of the National Energy Foundation, the UK Solar Energy Society, Cambridge Global Health Partnerships and the Guild of Church Musicians. She is also chair of Cambridge Early Music and a trustee of the Britten Sinfonia.

Citizens Advice has announced the appointment of Ann-Marie Harkin to its board of trustees.

Harkin is currently financial audit director and engagement lead with the Wales Audit Office and previously worked for the National Audit Office. She will also join CA’s Cymru Committee.

Citizens Advice have also announced that David Varney, the organisation’s current chair, will be stepping down from his post in the autumn due to ill health. The charity has said it will “begin recruiting for a new chair shortly”.

The V&A has announced that Princess Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, has agreed to become the charity’s royal patron.

The museum said the Duchess’ acceptance of the role “follows her previous support for the museum in June 2017”. In taking up the role, the Duchess of Cambridge becomes the V&A’s first ever royal patron.
