Our weekly summary of the latest movers in the charity sector.  


Chief executive

The director of Catholic aid charity Cafod, Chris Bain, has announced that he will retire from the organisation in December.

Bain has led the organisation for 15 years, and is also currently a trustee of the Disasters Emergency Committee. 

He previously worked for Christian Aid, Oxfam and VSO.

Digital giving platform Neighbourly has appointed Steve Butterworth as its new chief executive. 

Butterworth replaces Luke McKeever who has stepped down from the organisation. McKeever had lead the organisation since September 2015. 

Butterworth’s new role will see him being responsible for refining Neighbourly’s growth strategy and lead discussions with potential investment partners. 


NHS Charities have appointed Ellie Orton as its new chief executive. She will join the organisation on 2 July 2018, replacing Amanda Witherall who is set to retire from the association at the end of May. 

Orton has worked in the specialist social care, education and faith sector both regionally and nationally. She is currently chief executive of Kairos Women Working Together, and was also the interim chief executive of The Jon Egging Trust. 


Fundraising and Communications

Simon Beresford has been appointed as the new director of fundraising and marketing at the Disasters Emergency Committee. He takes over in the role from Adil Husseini, who is leaving the DEC to set up his own fundraising and events agency.

Beresford will join the organisation at the end of this month, and will be leading on the organisation’s joint fundraising appeals and supporter engagement. 

Beresford joins from Methodist relief charity All We Can, where he was head of fundraising and marketing for four years. He is also a trustee for the national children’s charity Spurgeons and is the founder and co-chair of the public fundraising group of Bond. 


National homelessness charity Crisis has appointed Richard Lee as its new director of fundraising. 

Lee joins Crisis from international disaster relief charity ShelterBox, where he has been director of fundraising since January 2016. Prior to working for ShelterBox, Lee was director of development at Young Enterprise UK; head of community fundraising and events at Oxfam and helped raise over £100m in his role as head of community fundraising at Macmillan Cancer Support.

Lee replaces Edward Tait in the role, after it was announced that Tait would be join ActionAid UK as its new director of fundraising in February of this year.

Non executive

John Downie, director of public affairs at the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations, has been appointed as a trustee of Home-Start UK.

Downie has been in his current role with SCVO for over eight years. He previously worked in the media, with New Media Corp and TVI. 

Downie will both sit on the family support charity’s wider UK-board, and will also be chairing the charity’s Scotland Committee, of which he has been a member since 2017. 


TV presenter Chris Packham has been appointed as the education ambassador for national animal charity Blue Cross

According to the charity, Packham will be “promoting our workshops which teach young people important messages on pet welfare”. He has recorded a series of videos to help promote the organisation’s work. 

Packham said: "I feel strongly that being able to engage children in the classroom can have a huge impact for the future and how they will safeguard and protect pets and other species. I was glad to be able to record these films for Blue Cross and hope our messages can help more pets through education.”
