The Royal British Legion has launched a new mobile-compatible website which it says will “encourage regular and new users to get involved” with the charity.

The website overhaul, which was unveiled on Monday afternoon, was undertaken in conjunction with web design company BPL Marketing, which the Legion has worked with since 2009.

Not only is the new website mobile-compatible (see picture) but also features “more story led content showing the breadth of the Legion’s work” and “incorporation of the 'Live On' brand into a clean and clear design,” according to a Legion spokeswoman.

Prakash Patel, head of digital at The Royal British Legion said: “The new website has been designed and built as a go to hub of advice, information and support for the Armed Forces community. We hope the new site will encourage regular and new users to get involved with the Legion.

“Working with our digital agency BPL Marketing, we have focused on additional storytelling to show the breadth of the Legion’s work. Importantly, the website is now significantly simpler and easier to use on mobile devices.  We’ve incorporated the clean look of our Live On brand, allowing visitors to quickly get support, get involved and Remember.”

The Royal British Legion would not disclose how much the website redesign cost.

The benefits of a mobile-compatible website

In April 2015, Google rolled out changes to its search function which gave more prominence to websites that it deemed mobile-friendly.

The criteria for being ‘mobile-friendly’ included text size, space between links and whether content fits across a mobile screen.

Earlier this year a Civil Society News investigation found that 33 of the UK’s top 100 charities did not have mobile-compatible websites. The British Legion was one of those.
