Rose Caldwell is chief executive of Plan International UK

Plan International UK has announced that Rose Caldwell, currently executive director of Concern Worldwide, has been appointed as its chief executive.

She will join in September and is taking over the role from Tanya Barron, who is retiring after six years in post.

Caldwell has been executive director at Concern Worldwide for ten years and has worked in the sector for 20 years.

She is a qualified chartered accountant and volunteering with Raleigh International and Concern Worldwide inspired her to work in the sector full-time.

She is currently on the board of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) and chair of Trustees of the International Broadcasting Trust (IBT).

“I am thrilled to be joining Plan International UK at this time. The recent resurgence of interest in gender equality needs to be harnessed to permanently change the future for today’s children,” Caldwell said.

“Poverty and inequality disproportionately affect women and children and there is still much to be done if we are to ensure children’s and girls voices are heard and their rights realised.

"Plan International UK’s work on children’s rights and equality for girls is inspirational and I look forward to working with staff, the youth advisory panel, trustees, partners, supporters and the wider Plan organisation to create a fairer world.”

Professor Sir Ian Diamond, chair of the charity, added:  “I am delighted to welcome Rose to Plan International UK. We are at an exciting time in the organisation’s history and Rose’s experience of working in NGOs in low income countries and of advocating for those most in need will be ideal for the next stage of Plan International UK’s journey.”

Concern Worldwide’s most recent report income was just under £35m last year while Plan International UK had an annual income of £66.7m for the year ending 30 June 2018.

Rose will be co-chairing Civil Society Media’s NGO Insight conference on 26 November, and is advising on the programme content. Find out more and register your interest on the event page.
