NCVO appoints interim chief executive

01 Jul 2025 News

Saskia Konynenburg, upcoming interim CEO of NCVO

NCVO

The National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) has appointed Saskia Konynenburg as interim chief executive while it continues the process of recruiting a new permanent CEO.

Konynenburg will step up from her current role as executive director of voice and impact on 1 August.

She will take over from Sarah Elliott, who joined the membership body in January 2020 as director of membership and engagement before becoming chief executive.

Elliott is set to leave NCVO this summer to lead housing and homelessness charity Shelter from September.

‘Strong executive team’

NCVO said Konynenburg will be supported by “a strong executive team made up of both longstanding and newly appointed directors”.

Kate Morris was appointed as director of finance and commercial in January, while Nick Gibson joined NCVO as director of transformation in May.

Meanwhile, Leigh Brimicombe has been appointed interim director of voice and impact.

NCVO’s chair Priya Singh said: “We’re delighted that Saskia will be taking on the role of Interim CEO.

“Over the last two years, Saskia has demonstrated the skills and experience needed to help guide our organisation through the months ahead.

“The board and I are grateful for her commitment and leadership to ensure NCVO continues to support its 17,000 members and the wider sector during this important time.”

Konynenburg said: “It’s an honour to step into the role of interim CEO at such a pivotal moment for the voluntary sector.

“The important work of NCVO continues, including working with government to launch the Civil Society Covenant and delivering for our members during challenging times.

“I’m fully committed to doing the very best for our staff, members, and stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition for the organisation.”

Meanwhile, a campaign launched during Small Charity Week (23-30 June) and led by NCVO, Big Give and Global’s Make Some Noise, raised £1.8m for small charities in seven days.

The organisations announced today that the initiative, which was the UK’s first nationwide match-funding campaign solely for small charities, would now become an annual event.
