A charity that runs a mosque in Hammersmith, west London, is challenging a decision to ban two of its trustees as part of an investigation.
The Charity Commission opened a statutory inquiry into the Al-Tawheed (TUCF) Charitable Trust in January 2024 after concerns were raised about an event held at its premises in 2020.
Organised by a third party, the event was a “religious remembrance programme” for major general Qasem Soleimani, a now-deceased senior figure in Iran’s military who was sanctioned by the UK government.
The commission said it heard “antisemitic chants”, which Civil Society understands were shouts of “death to Israel”, in a video recording of the event.
At the time, the charity said in a statement that it acknowledged “the gravity of the allegations raised” and that “the trustees who held office during the events under investigation are no longer affiliated with our organisation”.
Now, the regulator has confirmed that it has removed two TUCF trustees as part of its investigation, with the intention of disqualifying them both.
The charity has challenged its trustees’ bans but the pair remain suspended.
A spokesperson for the commission said: “On 23 July 2025 we suspended two trustees of the Al-Tawheed (TUCF) Charitable Trust and on the same day notified them of our intention to disqualify them both.
“They have challenged their disqualification.
“It is now for the tribunal to decide whether their appeal should be upheld. In the meantime, both remain suspended by order of the commission from acting as trustees.
“We also issued an order directing the remaining trustees to take actions to improve the governance and management of the charity, which they must comply with.
“We cannot comment further as this legal process and the inquiry into the charity are ongoing.”
A TUCF spokesperson told the Financial Times last week, for a piece that raised wider concerns about Iranian influence in the UK charity sector, that the charity has “no relationship with any state or government”.
“The trustees have been working diligently and constructively with the Charity Commission to address its concerns,” they told the newspaper.
TUCF has five trustees listed on the register of charities. It recorded an income of £19,200 in the year to September 2024.
Civil Society has contacted TUCF for comment.
