Civil society is a fascinating place, not just here in the UK but abroad too.  Here’s our pick of what’s been going on over the last week...

Representatives from civil society organisations throughout India are to hold a one-day hunger strike in support of Irom Sharmila, the activist who has been fasting for 11 years in protest at a law that gives the security forces the power to kill with impunity. Canadian financier and reality TV star W. Brett Wilson  plans to give the vast bulk of his wealth to charity before or when he dies, leaving his three kids with very little.

The RNLI has been forced to say sorry for a spoof video created by some of its lifeguards and posted online.  In the film the lifeguards apparently simulate sex acts, make homophobic slurs, impersonate Adolf Hitler and insult ginger people.

A 25-year-old singleton attempted to sell a date to her brother’s wedding on eBay to raise money for Diabetes UK – until eBay removed the posting.  But plenty of people have taken to her Justgiving page instead.
