Cambridge Rollerbillies raised hundreds of pounds in just a few hours for an LGBTQ+ charity that had some of its property damaged.

Last Friday, a window of the Kite Trust’s office and youth work hub, that was displaying a pride flag, was destroyed.

In response, Cambridge Rollerbillies set up a fundraising page on JustGiving with the aim of raising £250 to help the charity pay for the repairs.

In total, 31 supporters donated £560 through the JustGiving page.

The Kite Trust, which supports the wellbeing and creativity of LGBTQ+ young people in Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and surrounding areas, said it will use the additional donations to support its beneficiaries.

Cambridge Rollerbillies said the Kite Trust had to cover the cost of the repairs itself due to a problem with insurance.

It wrote on the JustGiving page: “In the wake of the awful things that have happened across what should be a celebratory LGBTQ+ history month, we at Cambridge Rollerbillies believe we have a responsibility to support the LGBTQ+ community, and would therefore like to fundraise for the repairs.”

In a tweet, Pip Garner, chief executive of the Kite Trust, said that another local business which “prominently display pride flags and symbols of their pagan faith” also “had their windows and some of their stock damaged the same evening”.

“We know as LGBTQ+ people it’s incredibly scary when someone seeks to cause harm because they fear or feel hatred towards the symbols of our community. But instead I want to highlight to everyone connected to us just how much you are loved, valued and our wider community cares,” Garner said.

“Our community is full of love and that is a powerful force in the face of hate! We won’t be intimidated.”
