Online shopping fundraising platform Give as you Live has announced its first offline partnership with Sainsbury’s to allow its users to raise money when they shop in store.
When shoppers use a reloadable, prepaid shopping card in store 4p in every £1 will go to their nominated charity.
The Sainsbury’s Everyday Shopping Card will be available from next month and shoppers will be able to use it in more than 1,100 stores.
To date Give as you Live has focused solely on raising money through its online platform. When registered users buy something from a participating retailer online, a percentage of their spend goes to their nominated charity. Users can change their nominated charity each month and each retailers decide what percentage to donate.
Fundraising company Everyclick launched the Give as you Live platform in 2011 and so far it has raised £5.5m for charities from online shoppers. It has more than 60,000 users and almost 4,000 retailers participate online and over 6,000 have registered to receive donations.
Annabelle Risdon, head of charities at Give as you Live, said: “The average weekly grocery shop is over £100, which means there is a huge opportunity for charities to receive an additional £200 a year per supporter from their supermarket shopping.”
Sarah Chesterton, commercial manager, business services at Sainsbury’s, said: “The Everyday Shopping Card will enable supporters to donate to their favourite charities just by doing their weekly shop, as well as providing charities with an additional funding stream – benefitting everyone involved in the scheme.”
Charites can register their interest on Give as you Live’s website. Supporters who sign-up will be sent an Everyday Shopping Card featuring the charity’s logo, which they will need activate and then transfer money to the card.
