Girlguiding launches new volunteering recruitment campaign

Girlguiding has launched its first ever campaign to recruit volunteers, to support the 70,000 girls and young women on the waiting list to join the Brownies and Guides.

The charity has not set a target for success, but says that it usually needs around two volunteers for every ten girls, meaning that it could need another 14,000 volunteers to support everyone on its waiting list.

The volunteering charity has launched its national #knowyourplace campaign, which features a film that can be shared on social media channels that celebrates how Girlguiding volunteers have ‘found their place’.

The campaign calls on “more people to volunteer and join the movement of girls and women empowering each other”.

Sally Illsley, deputy chief guide, said: “The spirit of the campaign is to turn the old fashioned idea that a woman should know her place on its head and reclaim it to make clear that a woman’s place is wherever she wants it to be.

“If you’re someone who would like to help inspire and empower a generation of girls and young women to find their place in the world then volunteering with Girlguiding is the chance to do just that.”

Girlguiding said it offers a “variety of flexible volunteering roles so people can find something that fits with the time they have to give, from helping out at a meeting once a month, to going along to support at weekend events or running occasional sessions with different groups”.

Girlguiding has over half a million members and is supported by 100,000 volunteers, running the charity's groups for different age groups: Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and the Senior Section.
