Free Gift Aid tools for charities released

04 Oct 2018 News

The Charity Finance Group has published a package of free online resources and graphics to help charities promote Gift Aid to their donors.

CFG published the resources today to coincide with its first Gift Aid Awareness Day, a national campaign to address the estimated £560m of Gift Aid which is unclaimed every year.

The resources, which are available online, include:

  • A one-pager of FAQs which explains Gift Aid in simple terms
  • A template declaration form
  • Articles and guidance to help charities register and avoid erroneous claims

Robert Jenrick, exchequer secretary to the Treasury, said: “CFG’s Gift Aid Awareness Day is an important moment in which we can help to explain Gift Aid and encourage more charities to use it, more volunteers to understand how it works and, importantly, more donors to tick the box, take advantage of it and ensure that for every one pound that they donate, an extra 25p from the Treasury goes to those charities that help to support good work across the country.”

Caron Bradshaw, chief executive of CFG, said: “While promoting Gift Aid has been a priority for CFG since it was introduced in 1990, today marks the start of a bold new campaign and an annual day of action to bring clarity to gift aid and educate everyone who generously donates to charity to make their donation go even further.”

The campaign will be promoted by CFG with the help of other charities, organisations and individuals across social media platforms throughout the day, with the hashtag #tickthebox.

HMRC opens £1.6m tax support fund for charities

Meanwhile, HM Revenue and Customs has announced it will allocate £1.6m in the year from April 2019 to charities who can offer extra help to members of the public to understand and comply with their tax obligations and claim their entitlements.

HMRC is looking for charities to help members of the public to form or rebuild a relationship with the organisation that enables them to engage directly with it in the future.

It is inviting bids for funding of between £10,000 and £450,000, with a maximum threshold set at 50 per cent of the charity’s turnover.

Interested charities must apply online by 2 November, with successful applicants notified by 17 December.

From 2020, HMRC plans to develop a longer term strategy, working with charities to provide support for customers who need extra help.
