Two new microdonation schemes which launched at the end of last year are claiming early fundraising successes.
The Pennies Foundation has raised over £57,000 via 250,000 donations since launching its ‘electronic charity box’ scheme last November.
Customers paying by card at participating branches of Domino’s Pizza, Zizzi and Travelodge can use the chip and pin machine add a denotation to their bill and Travelodge customers booking online can chose to round up to the nearest pound.
Each retail partner has nominated a charity which receives 75 per cent of the donation with the remaining 25 per cent distributed among Pennies’ ten chosen charities.
Alison Hutchison, chief executive of The Pennies Foundation, said: “Every penny goes to charity and four months from launch, Pennies is starting to make a difference.”
Meanwhile, online shopping application Give as you Live has also announced that it has done better than expected during a pilot phase, with 7.3 per cent of its active users on target to raise more than £75 for charity. So far just under 4,000 people have downloaded the application. The largest amount raised so far in a single transaction was £70 with the purchase of a Sky subscription.
Developed by Everyclick, the application works by monitoring the user’s activity and suggesting similar products. If the user clicks on a link then a portion of the commission is redirected to the users chosen charity.
Participating charities receive up to 90 per cent revenue share. Two hundred and fifty UK charities are signed up to Give as you Live.
Currently the application is only compatible with Microsoft Internet Explorer and Firefox web browsers but the organisation is working to develop other versions.
