A song released by a group of lesbian singers in support of two gay rights charities has become a top-five hit on both the Amazon UK and iTunes UK rock charts.

A song released by a group of lesbian singers in support of two gay rights charities has become a top-five hit on both the Amazon UK and iTunes UK rock charts.

Sofia Antonia Milone, co-ordinator of the L Project told civilsociety.co.uk that the group hoped the song would raise “well into the tens of thousands of pounds,” for Stonewall and Diversity Role Models, which will receive all royalties from sales of the song to support action against homophobic bullying.

Diversity Role Models will receive 80 per cent of the money to support its work in schools educating children to prevent bullying.

Milone said: "Diversity Role Models is a much younger charity, and we'd really like to give them a real boost because their initiative is so closely aligned with our own."

The song, 'It Does Get Better', was written by L Project founder, Georgey Payne and also features vocals by Horse, Sandra MacBeth, Emma Kavanagh, Christina Novelli, Nicky Mitchell, O'Hooley and Tidow, Nina McCann and Amy Louise Sutton. It was recorded last year with all the artists, supporters and promoters volunteering their time.

The track has been available to download from sites like iTunes and Amazon since 11 February. Over its launch weekend it reached the top spot in the Amazon UK Best Sellers Rock charts and number 5 in the Rock Song Chart on the UK’s iTunes. It has come within the top 20 in US and Australian download charts.

Milone added that releasing the song was just the beginning and that “there’s still a lot more we can and will be doing with the song, and various other merchandise opportunities to raise money”.
