Commission assessing ‘serious concerns’ about ‘gay healing’ charities

The Charity Commission is assessing serious concerns about two Christian charities which claim that God can heal same-sex attraction.

According to an ITV documentary Winners Chapel International, a £10m-a-year charity based in Dartford, claims that modern social attitudes to homosexuality are “scripted by Satan” and that it can carry out “gay conversion therapy” to cure those individuals.

Another much smaller charity, Journey UK, is reported by ITV as claiming that God can heal gaps in individuals which can lead to them renouncing homosexuality.

A Commission spokeswoman said that the regulator was aware of serious concerns raised about both charities.

“The public rightly expect charities to be places in which people can feel safe and free from harm, so reports of this nature are of serious concern to the Commission,” she said.

“We are assessing information as a matter of urgency and will be engaging with the trustees to determine our next steps.”

Both charities have been approached for comment but had not responded at the time of publication.
