The Charity Commission has appointed an experienced commercial auditor to replace former board member Nazo Moosa as chair of its audit and risk committee.

Mike Ashley, who is also chair of the audit committee at Barclays and a member of HM Treasury’s audit committee, will join the Commission board from 1 November.

Ashley’s other current appointments include:

  • Vice chair, European Financial Reporting Advisory Group’s Technical Expert Group
  • Non-executive director for Government Internal Audit Agency
  • Member of ICAEW’s Ethics Standards Committee

He was formerly head of quality and risk management at KPMG Europe and has more than 20 years’ experience as an audit partner for several large financial services groups (most recently HSBC Holdings and Standard Chartered PLC) and for the Bank of England.

William Shawcross, Charity Commission chair, said Ashley’s “very considerable skills and experience” will help the Commission continue to strengthen its regulatory approach.

His appointment is for three years.
