Charity Commission surveys charities on fraud resilience

26 Feb 2019 News

The Charity Commission has emailed 15,000 charities, asking them to complete a questionnaire about their resilience to fraud.

The regulator, in partnership with the Fraud Advisory Panel, has opened the survey to help it gain a better understanding of charities’ resilience to fraud and their levels of cyber security.

It urged those charities contacted to try to answer the questions in the survey, which it estimates will take 15 minutes to complete, “as honestly as possible”.

The Commission said all answers will be treated in the strictest confidence and will not be disclosed or shared with persons or organisations outside of the regulator.

Alan Bryce, head of development and operational intelligence at the Commission, said: “This is a really important project that should significantly improve our understanding of what’s happening across the charity sector and shape our regulatory engagement, helping to build a stronger counter-fraud culture for the future.

“I urge those charities contacted to get actively involved and complete the questionnaire – your answers really will make a difference.”

Consultancy Populus will carry out the survey, which will run for four weeks, with the Commission intending to publish findings later this year.

The 15,000 charities were selected at random. Charities not contacted by the Commission do not need to take any action.

Early bird tickets for Civil Society Media's Trustee Exchange conference, which takes place in April, end this Friday.
