A number of charities have expressed disappointment after a fundraising event in Scotland was inexplicably cancelled with the organiser not responding to attempts to contact it.

The She Runs the Night event was supposed to take place in Edinburgh last Friday and charities including the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Royal Blind, expecting to raise money. Tickets for the event were £23, according to Third Force News.

One such charity, Royal Blind had also been persuaded by the organiser to promote the event on its website. According to the charity, the organiser has since ignored “multiple” attempts at contact. Supporters of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust were also due to take part in the event, but the organisation said neither they no it had lost money as a result.

EMMS International, has told Third Force News that it has contacted the police regarding the event and are encouraging supporters to do the same.

The She Runs the Night website now carries a brief statement which reads: “It is with sadness that we have had to pull this event from [sic] 2017 calendar”. It also features an email address whereby those who purchased tickets can get "information on refunds".

Civil Society News has contacted the event organisers for a comment.

'Incredibly disappointing'

Beverly Burnham-Jones, head of community giving and events at the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, said it was “incredibly disappointing” that the event had been cancelled and urged those considering fundraising for the organisation “not to be put off”.

“As a charity that relies heavily on donations from generous members of the community to continue our work to beat cystic fibrosis for good, it’s incredibly disappointing when something like this happens.

“We urge anyone thinking of fundraising for us not to be put off by this activity and to check the Trust’s website for details on all the exciting ways they can get involved to make a real difference for those living with cystic fibrosis.”

A spokeswoman for Royal Blind said: “We have recently become aware of the issues surrounding this event and have removed it from our website. We've tried multiple times to contact the organisers but have been unable to get hold of them. Fortunately, Royal Blind has not been affected financially as the participants we had in this event had taken the free spaces offered by the organisers.

“It is unfortunate when incidents like this occur as charities like ours benefit greatly from the funds raised from sponsored events. Royal Blind has a wide range of other events listed on our website that our supporters can participate in instead.”
