Booking is now open for the Charity Property Conference, organised by Charity Finance magazine.

The conference, which will be held on 7 July at BMA House in London, is focused on helping charities get the most out of their property, whether by buying or selling, refurbishing, or finding a new purpose for an underused building.

The conference includes presentations on the state of the charity property market, on the role of social enterprise in the use of property, and on how to convert property from a cost into a resource.

The conference also features five case studies from charities which have successfully moved office, constructed new buildings, or adapted their property to make it fit for the future.

Karen Gravestock (pictured), one of the speakers and director of people and place at the Worldwide Fund for Nature said that her charity had seen transformation as a result of creating a new property.

She said her charity’s new headquarters “walks the walk” in terms of environmental benefit, and has helped the organisation’s staff buy into these aims as well.

Zac Goodman, chief executive of TSP and another of the speakers, said that charities face a more difficult environment when it comes to buying and selling property because of the buoyancy of the market, particularly in London and other major cities, and that organisations needed to think carefully about how they proceeded.

“My experience is that many charities are looking at selling property and using the resources to further their objectives,” he said. “But property is often a very emotive issue for charity. It’s often the foundation of their balance sheet and integral to their objectives. They need to think carefully about how they manage change.”
