Applications open for small charities advisory panel following SCC closure

14 Jun 2022 News

Recruitment for roles on a new small charities advisory panel is now underway following the closure of the Small Charities Coalition (SCC).

The Foundation for Social Improvement (FSI) and NCVO are organising the panel as part of its new collaboration to deliver key services for small charities after the closure of SCC in March.

Services from the SCC have been transferred to the FSI and NCVO’s partnership. These include the SCC Helpdesk, The Charity Set Up Tool and a maintenance and resource hub for small charities.

The small charities advisory panel will ensure the voices of small charities continue to be heard in the transfer of SCC services, the partnership has said.

The partnership wants the panel to offer insight and take into consideration the SCC’s closing report, Small and Mighty, on the needs of small charities.

The role of the panel

The panel will engage other infrastructure partners and organisations in the small charity sector. Panel members will study the wider offer for small charities across the sector from funders and infrastructure bodies to ensure it is comprehensive and responsive.

FSI and NCVO are recruiting twelve members to the panel, including five from small charities (organisations with an income of less than £1m), two from funders, and five from infrastructure bodies, with one providing volunteering expertise.

The chair of the panel will be one of the small charity representatives. The group will meet quarterly in the first 12 months.

Sarah Vibert, chief executive of NCVO, said: “I know from running a small charity – which make up the majority of organisations in the voluntary sector – just how valuable the support they receive is. I am delighted that this new small charity advisory panel will work closely alongside us at NCVO and partnership colleagues at the FSI, to provide insight which will help us to secure and build on the legacy of the Small Charities Coalition.

“We are determined to continue to deliver a distinct and comprehensive support offer for small charities, which always evolves to meet changing needs. This panel will be vital in helping our partnership succeed. I encourage anyone who is passionate about the power of small to find out more and get involved!”

Recruitment will take place through an open process. Anyone who would like to become a member of the panel must register their interest before 30 June.

Stuart Thomason, chief executive of the FSI, said: “The FSI – as a small charity ourselves - has provided free advice for small charities for over 15 years, and we are pleased to expand this offer alongside NCVO by building on the legacy of the Small Charities Coalition.

“We will continue to offer free and heavily subsided capacity-building support for people building impactful organisations. We are also committed to developing our offer and the small charity advisory panel we are creating will help us to do this and ensure the voices of small charities are heard and amplified. Please do get involved and apply to join this crucial new champion of small charities.”
