September’s cover theme is part II of our Board Diversity topic. In part I, in July, we looked at whether board diversity could be improved by making it easier to pay trustees; in part II we explore other ideas for making charity boards more diverse and therefore effective.

This includes:

  • A case study from Keech Hospice, which recently redesigned its trustee recruitment process to attract fresh and non-traditional perspectives.
  • A report of the strategy of new charity Board Racial Diversity UK, which aims to attract 60,000 more Black and global majority candidates to trustee roles.
  • A partnership proposal whereby trustee roles are embedded into real-world leadership development or early career development schemes by employers, as a solution to both growing the skills of employees and filling trustee vacancies.
  • A case study from Alternative Futures Group, a large charity that deploys associate trustees to both boost the trustee pipeline and bolster diversity.
