Institute of Fundraising handbook

The Institute of Fundraising has published a free guide to help trustees understand fundraising.

Trustees and fundraising: a practical handbook was launched at the IoF’s first trustee conference earlier this week. It was produced in collaboration with the Charity Finance Group and NCVO.

It has been designed to complement the Charity Commission’s guidance on fundraising, CC20, and includes a number of case studies and explains how different regulators are involved in fundraising.

Opening the conference, Peter Lewis, chief executive of the IoF, said that “the last 18 months have been particularly difficult for fundraisers as a sector but also for charity as a whole.”

“The key thing that has stuck in my mind over the last 18 months,” he said “is that trustees and charities should embed values within fundraising just as much as they do in service delivery or in campaigning”.

He added that the guide had been produced to “help them [trustees] understand what they can do practically to embed fundraising” and understand the rules.

“It’s not just about stamping out practice,” he said. “This is an opportunity to embrace fundraising and get trustees thinking about it strategically.”
