YMCA Glasgow rebrands as Y People 2

Governance | Vibeka Mair | 17 Nov 2010

YMCA Glasgow has rebranded as Y People in a similar move to YMCAs in America which rebranded as the Y earlier this year.

Joe Connolly, chief executive of YMCA Glasgow, said: “The increasing scope of our activities and initiatives across Scotland coupled with the fact that we provide services to an extremely wide range of service users of all ages, cultures and creeds, convinced us that the time was right for the organisation’s name to change.”

A spokesman for YMCA Scotland said the rebrand for the Glasgow branch was not planned for other Scottish YMCAs.

“We had gone through a branding process with Scottish YMCAs earlier this year,” he said. “But the name change for YMCA Glasgow is a local piece of work and does not relate to other Scottish YMCAs.”

YMCA England, the national council for YMCAs in England, also said there were no plans to move away from the name but it was planning to jointly look at branding together with English YMCAs shortly.

YMCAs in the USA rebranded as the Y this July, marking the end of its 166-year history with the name.

Neil Nicoll, president of the YMCA of the USA, said the change was necessary to communicate "our story, bringing more people to the place where they can realise the benefits we bring".

Why have you changed the name to Y People?

Is it more to do with the removal of the word Christian so you don't offend other faiths?

Oops you got caught out!

YMCAs in the USA rebranded as the Y this July, DID NOT mark the end of its 166-year history with the name as intimated in this article. Their new brand logo clearly has the letters YMCA written on the side of the large Y which is their new logo!!!!
