From 14 regions covering the UK, Channel Islands and the Isle of Mann, 103 charities have been chosen as recipients of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2010, commonly regarded as the ‘charity MBE’, it was announced yesterday.
2010 is the award’s eighth year, having been launched in celebration of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee to recognise and reward excellence in voluntary activities carried out by groups in the community. The recipients, comprised of both small charities and franchises of larger charities will receive a certificate signed by The Queen and a commemorative piece of crystal.
Leading representatives from each local community together with the Queen’s own representatives, or Lord Lieutenants, judged the entries to find those that most successfully fulfilled the criteria. They chose 80 organisations in England, eleven in Scotland, four in both Wales and Northern Ireland, three from the Channel Islands and one from the Isle of Mann.
