Ex-MI5 chief joins Wellcome Trust board

A former director general of MI5 has joined the board of the Wellcome Trust.

Eliza Manningham-Buller (pictured) led the Security Service for five years before retiring in 2007.

During her tenure at the organisation she supported the government’s management of the Northern Ireland peace process and led the European response to terrorism while Britain held the presidency of the European Union between July and December 2005.

She was made a life peer in 2008, sitting on the cross-benches in the House of Lords.

When announcing Baroness Manningham-Buller’s appointment to the board, Sir William Castell, chair of the Wellcome Trust, said: “She has an outstanding record of leadership in public services and will add considerably to the breadth of experience available to us at the Trust.”

The Wellcome Trust is one of the largest charities in the UK. It invests around £600m a year on innovative biomedical research in the UK and overseas.
