Sharing the love. There’s enough to go round in the charity sector

Sharing is second nature to the charity sector, says Lucy Caldicott, reflecting on the number of connections she makes in a single day.

Here are some things I did for and with other charities the other day:

  • helped someone evaluate a recent DRTV campaign
  • chatted to someone who has recently taken on some fundraising responsibilities that are unfamiliar to them
  • spent the evening with a group of fundraising directors from different charities discussing digital opportunities and how we’re approaching them
  • did some planning for the next FR tweets discussion

I often reflect on how different my working life is from when I worked in the commercial sector. When I was at American Express, the rumour was that you’d be marched out of the building forthwith if you dared to get a job with Visa. But no one ever did, cos there be dragons!

These days I work in a sector where sharing is second nature. And why wouldn’t it be? I work for a charity that supports children and young people with cancer. But why wouldn’t I want to help adults with cancer, homeless people, and refugees as well?

So I do.
