Just in time for the school holidays the National Trust has launched this video, fronted by comedian Hugh Dennis, counting down the top 10 outdoor activities to inspire  ‘cotton wool generation’ children to connect with nature.

It is part of the charity’s annual ’50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾' campaign to get 200,000 children playing outside.

Dennis said:  “My most treasured childhood memories are of being in the outdoors so it’s a sad thought that kids today aren’t enjoying the experiences which we remember so fondly. There are so many simple delights to be had – and it doesn’t have to be a chore or ordeal to do either. Back gardens can be as much as a treasure trove for kids as the seaside or a local park.”

To mark the start of this year’s campaign the Trust is hosting more than 1,000 events over the school holidays. It has also launched a website with resources and tips for parents and plans to launch mobile app later in July. The campaign first ran in 2012 and so far 90,000 children have taken part.
