Avid readers of Charity News Alert will recall an a few weeks ago where we highlighted acevo chief Stephen Bubb’s description of himself in his blog as ‘leader of the third sector’.

Now, it seems, Bubb has a challenger to the title. In the NCVO’s latest press release urging greater protection for charities in the financial crisis, its chief executive Stuart Etherington is described in the headline as ‘voluntary sector boss’.

And the first line reads: “Charities need a strong show of support from the government during this time of financial downturn and economic instability, the leading voluntary and community sector leader said today.”

The “leading sector leader”? Not just the leader, but the leading leader? That must put him ahead of Bubb in the leadership stakes, as Bubb had limited himself to mere ‘third sector leader’.

Is this a competition? If so, who should be the winner? Should there by any other contenders for the title? What about Kevin Curley, Keith Hickey, or Lindsay Boswell? Shouldn’t Joe Saxton be in there – after all, he’s four-times winner of Professional Fundraising’s 50 Most Influential People in Fundraising poll, and appeared in the Evening Standard’s 1,000 most influential Londoners list earlier this month.

Realistically though, it probably is a two-horse race. Perhaps we could help to sort out the winner once and for all. Please cast your vote in this week’s Quick Poll.
