The importance of the treasurer role in charities was highlighted recently at the 2010 Volunteer of the Year Awards, hosted by the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA).

Three of the four Welsh Trustee Awards were presented to treasurers at the ceremony on 10 June.

Frank Learner, treasurer of the Community Foundation in Wales, John Gale of the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales and Hugh Evans from Ynys Môn were the treasurers that received the awards, whilst the other went to Sue Muxworthy from the Council for Wales of Voluntary Youth Services.

All winners were presented with their awards at the annual ceremony held in Cardiff Castle (pictured), while nominees received certificates of high commendation.

“The Wales Volunteer of the Year Award acknowledges the dedication of volunteers who have helped make the biggest difference in the communities in which they live,” said Graham Benfield OBE, chief executive of WCVA.

“These are people who are recognised for their initiative, dedication or their personal qualities. They are an inspiration, and the quality of nominations each year shows us just how strong the voluntary sector and volunteering ethos is in Wales.”

Frank Learner said the proliferation of treasurers amongst the winners was "an indicator of the importance of the treasurer role to a charity".
