A teenager with terminal cancer has raised more than £1.6m for the Teenage Cancer Trust, including £1m in the past two days.

Stephen Sutton, a 19-year-old with incurable bowel cancer, made a “bucket list” of things he wanted to achieve before he died in January 2013. His goals included raising £10,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Later he increased that to £1m.

On Tuesday he posted on Facebook that it was “one final thumbs up from me”, in a farewell to fans and followers.

“It's a shame the end has come so suddenly,” he wrote. “There's so many people I haven't got round to properly thank or say goodbye too.

“All future updates on this page will probably be from a family member. I will continue fighting for as long as I can, and whatever happens next I want you all to know I am currently in a good place mentally and at ease with the situation.

“That's it from me. But life has been good. Very good.”

At that point he had raised £600,000. Since then his story has been spread by celebrities including the comedian Jason Manford, and his JustGiving page has seen a surge in donations, taking the total raised so far to £1.64m. He has received more than 66,000 donations.

He has ticked off 32 of the 46 items on his bucket list, included skydiving for charity, organising a flash mob, getting a tattoo, and hugging an animal bigger than himself.
