Donations to Stephen Sutton’s fundraising page have passed the £4m mark, ahead of the inspirational teenager’s funeral this afternoon.

People are continuing to give to his JustGiving page, and the total now stands at £4,062,267 from almost 175,000 donations. A two-day vigil for Stephen has been held at Lichfield Cathedral, with people queuing to pay their respects. A private funeral takes place this afternoon.

This morning, the Teenage Cancer Trust’s director of fundraising, Kate Collins, told BBC Breakfast that the charity planned to use the money to scale up the charity’s work supporting young people and their families.

“Stephen was able to put into words really simply and really effectively what it is like for a young person going through cancer,” she said.

David Wright, lead nurse at Teenage Cancer Trust, added: “It will help us to expand the number of specialist nurses and specialist youth workers we have got so that we can provide more support to more and more young people.”

Stephen died earlier this month from incurable bowel cancer. His fundraising campaign and blog attracted the attention and support of the national media, celebrities and politicians.

He made the video below in partnership with the Make a Wish Foundation to help spread his message of positivity.
