An analysis of charity Christmas cards has found that many big retailers give less than a quarter of the sale price of their charity Christmas cards to the cause, with Asda, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose among those to give just 10 per cent.

loveMONEY found that only Debenhams donates 100 per cent of its sales to its chosen cause, Children in Need. Although that was for one pack from the range and other cards sold by the retailer donate 20 per cent.

John Lewis, Aldi and Lidl were the next best, each donating 25 per cent of the sale of the cards to charity.

At the bottom of the able are Asda, Ryman, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and WHSmith which give 10 per cent.

However there appears to have been a small improvement in the generosity of retailers – last year the least generous retailers donated less than 10 per cent of the sale price.

A similar investigation by Which? last year found that the Co-operative 7 per cent of the sale price. This year Co-op said it would give a lump sum of £30,000 to the British Red Cross instead.

Morrisons and Tesco are also opting for a lump sums. Morrisons is donating £50,000 to Sue Ryder and Tesco is giving its national partners, Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation £300,000.
