Museum and gallery staff in Glasgow are set to go on strike today for the second time in two weeks.
Workers at Culture and Sport Glasgow are protesting at changes in pay and conditions which would see a pay freeze and cuts in public holiday entitlements for the charity’s 1,600 staff.
Furthermore, around 200 staff stand to lose up to £2,000 from their salaries due to changes in opening hours.
A strike last week led to the closure of the Kelvingrove Museum (pictured), the Burrell Collection and the People's Palace.
Staff at the charity are represented by four different unions, Unison, Unite, the GMB and Bectu, all of whom returned positive ballots for industrial action.
Brian Smith, Unison branch secretary for Glasgow, said: “We had a meeting with the employers on Friday last week and they weren’t willing to move at all, which was disappointing.”
A spokesman for Culture and Sport Glasgow said: “Around one-in-seven of our staff voted for strike action and the trade unions are fully aware that the public sector is not immune from the current financial crisis.
We have consistently made it clear that our priority is to protect both services and jobs. In order to make the savings necessary to achieve this, we must change the way we work – or be forced to consider job cuts.”
One possible barrier to today’s strike is a legal action from Glasgow City Council, which is concerned that pickets near polling stations may discourage voters.
