A new social media index has said that the RSPCA has the fourth best digital charity brand globally, with Oxfam, the British Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières also ranking in the top 10.

The Brandwatch Social Index, published this week, ranks international brands across a number of sectors, including the voluntary and non-profit sectors. Its 2016 index has found that the RSPCA has the best social media brand of any UK charity or non-profit, and the fourth highest globally.

The rankings are based on “social visibility”, “general visibility”, “net sentiment”, “reach growth” and “engagement and content”, with each category given a score out of 100. The RSPCA scored 270 – with its social media brand being given a perfect score for its “engagement and content”.

A number of other UK-based charities also were ranked in the top 10. Oxfam came in sixth in the overall rankings with an overall score of 257. Both the British Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières also came in the top 10.

The best social media non-profit brand was awarded to American based non-profit media organisation National Public Radio (NPR). US-based civil rights organisation the Human Rights Campaign came in second, while Wikileaks came in third.

The social index was first launched in September 2015. It also analyses social brands in a number of other industries, including: retail, automotive and the public sector. Brands are assessed and ranked quarterly based on “the most current data and social performance”.
