The Office for Civil Society has announced the 19 providers chosen to run the 2012 National Citizen Service programme, which will aim to reach three times as many young people as this year’s pilots.

There will be 30,000 places available next year, compared to 10,000 this year, and at least 19 providers, instead of 12. Government funding for the scheme will grow from £13m this year to £37m next year.

This will be the second round of pilots for the scheme, with the government hoping to roll the programme out nationally in 2013.

Providers on the 2011 scheme - Bolton Lads and Girls Club, Catch 22 (leading a consortium), Connexions Cumbria and the National Young Volunteers’ Service (v) working with the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust, have been chosen again for 2012.

The Prince’s Trust, which is running pilots this year, is not on the initial 2012 list. But other providers are due to be announced shortly.

However, the National Citizen Service (NCS) scheme has been dealt a blow this week, with reports that a scheme run in Oxfordshire, which contains David Cameron's constituency of Witney, has had to close due to lack of interest.

Only half of the places on the project run by Oxfordshire Association for Young People have been taken up, according to Children & Young People Now.
