Prostrate Cancer UK entered at 94 of this year's Charity 250 Index, which was topped by mental health charity Rethink.

The index, which measures the largest charities outside the top 100, saw a 2.4 per cent rise in median income.

The ‘entry ticket’ level of income for the index, published by Charity Finance magazine, has remained £16.8m, and the highest income rose 1.4 per cent to £50.7m. Median income rose from £24.5m to £25.1m.

There were 19 new entries in the index, with five dropping from the Charity 100 Index, and 14 coming in from outside. The highest new entry was Prostate Cancer UK, with an income of £27.9m, which was newly formed after a merger, and enters in 94th position.

The index saw 64 per cent of charities rise and 32 per cent fall. The remainder stayed the same.

The biggest riser in the 2015 index was the Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre Trust which jumped 83 places in the ranking from 212 to 129. The charity’s income rose in the last two years by over 50 per cent to £24.8m.

One of the biggest casualties in this year’s 250 Index is the Congregation of the Sisters of Nazareth Charitable Trust, which fell 109 places from position 120 in 2014 to position 229. Its income fell by 69 per cent in the year to 31 March 2013, after 13 of its 15 care establishments underwent operations transfers to the Nazareth Care Charitable Trust.

While the CSNCT still runs two care centres in Northern Ireland, its income fell a further 47 per cent in the year ending 31 March 2014, making it the favourite to fall out of the 250 Index all together next year.
