Prime Minister David Cameron is today launching an awards programme recognising those who have made a significant contribution towards the Big Society.

The awards, which begin this week and will be issued intermittently, will honour those who have in some way helped shape their local area. This can include improving public services or setting up their own cooperatives.

Cameron said: “There are some amazing projects and remarkable voluntary work going on in towns and cities up and down the country.

"These awards are a chance to pay tribute to those making a valuable contribution to their community, the real champions of the Big Society, but perhaps more importantly, I hope they will motivate many others to take action, get involved and drive change in their area."

The first winner has already been selected. Central Surrey Heath, which provides community nursing on behalf of the NHS, is the first of many organisations honoured with the award.

The Prime Minister said: “Congratulations to Central Surrey Heath on becoming the very first Big Society award winners

“They are an excellent example of people on the front line taking a stake in their organisation, driving real improvements and shaping the service they provide”.

Nominations can be made via the Number 10 website.

Winners will be invited to a regular Big Society award winners reception at Downing Street.
