Oxfam is launching an interactive art event to create a record-breaking Mother’s Day card at Westfield London as part of a £10m fundraising appeal.
To break the world record for the most contributions to a greetings card more than 7,355 messages and dedications are needed, the charity said.
Members of the public will be able to contribute to the card online at the dedicated website, Happiestmothersdaycard.org, and in person at the shopping centre in Shepherd’s Bush from today until Sunday.
Oxfam said participants will be asked to make an optional donation as part of the event, which is part of the charity’s Mother Appeal.
Lizzie Mary Cullen, an illustrator, will turn their individual messages into artworks that will come together to form a giant Mother’s Day card, the charity said. A live video stream of her working will be available on the website.
Oxfam’s Mother Appeal launched in December and runs until the end of this month.
The UK government is match-funding the appeal up to the value of £5m.
Oxfam said the money from the Department for International Development will fund three projects in Bangladesh, Tajikistan and Zambia that are part of Oxfam’s Gendered Enterprise and Markets programme, which aims to develop sustainable livelihoods and help women earn a better income and gain equal status.
John Lucas, supporter development manager at Oxfam, said: “The aim is to mobilise networks and communities of people to come together and share in a celebration of mums by creating something that is very social and sharable, while at the same time very personal.”
