NSPCC has confirmed that it will reduce its number of employees by 235 people (14%) after consulting affected staff on the plans earlier this year.

The children’s charity initially proposed cutting 250 roles last month but has revised this figure down following a 30-day consultation.

In a new statement, the charity said it would continue delivering Childline, its core schools programme, direct services for children and families and NSPCC helpline despite the cuts.

A spokesperson for NSPCC said that “like many other charities”, it had “not been immune to the challenges facing our sector”.

“To ensure our work continues long into the future and that we can make an even greater impact we must invest in our future, confront economic challenges head on and focus our efforts so that we’re able to make the greatest difference in keeping children safe,” they said.

“Following a period of consultation, we have regrettably made some very challenging decisions around the size and shape of our workforce and the services we provide, including ending some time-limited local initiatives.

“We understand how difficult this will be for those affected, as well as for the wider NSPCC family. We are working with those impacted by these changes to ensure that they are fully supported through every step of this process including, where possible, identifying opportunities for redeployment across the organisation as well as providing careers coaching and wellbeing support.”

They added: “While these are tough decisions, we believe them to be the right ones to make sure the NSPCC is here for children and young people for generations to come.”

In the year to March 2024, the charity’s overall income was £125m and its expenditure was £118m, according to its latest accounts.
