Unlock has said its newly appointed CEO will no longer be taking up the role, 12 days after announcing he would be leading the organisation.

The criminal justice charity said Andrew Henley had been appointed after an “extensive search process” but after a combination of ongoing health issues and further considerations, he has decided “it is not the right time” for him to take up the post.

Henley was due to start his role as Unlock's permanent CEO today, replacing Angela Cairns, who stepped down as CEO last May to take time out and “explore other interests”.

Henley has more than 10 years of experience working as an academic criminologist at Keele University and the University of Nottingham. He previously served as a trustee at Unlock for six years.

Justina Forristal and Jo Easton have been working as joint interim CEOs while the charity does not have a permanent leader and will continue to do so on an ongoing basis.

Forristal is also set to partner with the board to secure the future leadership of the organisation.

An Unlock spokesperson told Civil Society that the board of trustees will be deciding whether to conduct another round of recruitment or look back over former candidates.

In a statement, Unlock said: “The board is working closely with the brilliant team at Unlock to support them through this period of change.”
