Charity axes Christine Hamilton as ambassador over burka comment

The charity Muscular Dystrophy UK has cut all ties with Christine Hamilton after a tweet she sent comparing the burka with the hoods worn by members of the Ku Klux Klan.

Hamilton, a right wing media personality, previously had references on her site to MDUK and Balls to Cancer, has now removed any mention of both of them from her profile.

Hamilton’s comments follow on from controversy over former foreign secretary Boris Johnson, who is under investigation by the Conservative party and has been asked to apologise, after negative comments about the burka last week.

Hamilton’s tweet, accompanied by pictures of a woman in a Klansman outfit, had said: “If the #burka is acceptable then presumably this is too?”

She wrote later that: “I am not comparing Muslim women to KKK members and yes, thank you, I do know the difference. I was graphically illustrating how full facial cover can be sinister, which is how many people view the burka.”

In response MDUK tweeted: “Christine Hamilton is no longer an ambassador of MDUK and all links between her and the charity have been severed.”
