Visits to charity pages on JustGiving from mobile devices almost doubled in the two weeks after Christmas, a spike that the online giving platform is attributing to the numbers of smartphones and tablets given as Christmas presents.

Mobile traffic increased from 402,000 visits in the two weeks leading up to Christmas to 770,000 in the fortnight after. It meant that mobile traffic made up nearly half (44 per cent) of all visits to the site during that period.

Visits from Android devices jumped by 95 per cent in the period, (an extra 85,000 visits) while Apple gadgets recorded a rise of 92 per cent, or an additional 264,000 visits. Web traffic from desktop computers remained relatively stable over the same timeframe, according to JustGiving.

Social media is behind much of the rise, with 15 per cent of smartphone and tablet traffic coming from Facebook Mobile.

Anne-Marie Huby, JustGiving’s managing director, said: “Smartphones and tablets are fast becoming the most popular devices for giving through our platform, while social networks are already the main driver for donations.”
